These aren't glamorous. They're simply fried goodness. (If you don't like a food item fried, you'll never like it.) Flour tortillas are typical of Northern Mexico cuisine, though I honestly don't know if fried flour tacos is authentic to the region or not. I got this idea from a friend who got it from someone in California. It's simple: make some spiced filling, add filling and cheese to the taco, fried it on each side, and serve with garnishes.
For the filling, I sauted some onion and garlic, added skinned and diced tomato, then ground beef and spices. I spice it differently everytime. Tonight I used ground coriander, cinnamon, cayenne, a bit or oregano, and a dash of all spice. Oh, and black pepper and salt.
When ready to eat, gently pry apart and add desired garnishes and extra hot sauce. Have plenty of napkins on hand and enjoy!
Uuhh - nice! Must make more Mexican food...

I hesitate to call these Mexican, but they sure are good.

My husband's aunt who hails from Mexico makes these except uses corn tortillas. If she does it, I think its pretty much authentic.

I'm super stoked to be making these tonight, but I bought corn torillas instead, hope they taste the same... :)

How did it work out?

Fried tacos are not really authentic but in the states that border California they may be found. Along the Texas border they are not known. On the Mexican side from Texas corn tortilllas are most popular but on the Texas side flour tortillas are most popular (cause of fat Tex-Mexes :-) )

That makes sense, given that I got this from someone who learn to fry tacos in California.
